蘭亭集序

Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Poems

An ink-wash valley: a pavilion under a pine, friends bowing by a winding stream, and his calligraphy writing in a card at the top right.

One take through an ink-wash valley, in step with a reading of the whole text, while his calligraphy writes itself in the corner. Then all 351 characters again, stroke by stroke.

The Price of Light

One desk, one light, 3,700 years

Five slices of one desk across 3,700 years: a sesame-oil lamp, a tallow candle, a kerosene lamp, a desk lamp with a bulb, and a 1990s desk lamp in front of a city at night.

A sesame-oil lamp turns into a candle, a kerosene lamp, a light bulb and a fluorescent tube, while the room around it changes era. The caption counts the work it takes to pay for one hour of light: 50 hours in ancient Babylon, half a second in 1994. Then the camera flies out of the window over the city.
